Summary of 61*:

61* is an endearing ode to the baseball days of yore when the press was the enemy, salaries were in check, and breaking records with bat and glove took on Ruthian proportions. In 1961 baseball expanded its season from 154 games to 162, allowing weaker pitching into the major leagues and two New York Yankees teammates–the colorless Roger Maris and golden boy Mickey Mantle–to make an assault on the sport’s ultimate record: Babe Ruth’s 60 home runs. To add to the stew, baseball commissioner Ford Frick announced any record set in the last eight games of the season wouldn’t count toward the official record; records had to be achieved in 154 games.

Director Billy Crystal guarantees success for his movie in the perfect casting of the leads. Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan’s religious sniper) is deft as Maris, and Thomas Jane is a perfect Mantle, a superman in a Yankee uniform. Despite the differences between family man Maris and hard-living Mantle, they form a rewarding friendship amid the media and fan frenzy. The shy Maris took the brunt of the storm, even facing boo-birds in his home stadium. Crystal and first-time writer Hank Steinberg keep the pace moving quickly between the field, the locker room, the press box, and the home front. The film never tries to dazzle with more than the facts (and it softens Mantle up a bit), yet it belongs on the short list of grand baseball movies. –Doug Thomas

I also think Eddie DeBase was great! The visuals and graphics make for some very realistic on screen special-effects but that is the beauty of the movie.When the movie wants to be funny it is funny, the same is true for when the movie needs to deliver its scary aspects.

Gatchaman Collector’s Box 1 Review - Free Online Movie Downloads - Why Are They Free

As Battle of the Planets (syndication, 1978), the Japanese series Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (1972) helped to build an audience for anime in America. For Battle, the original 105 episodes were recut to 85, with much of the violence deleted from the fight scenes. New animation featuring the comic robot 7-Zark-7 linked what remained. Turner Broadcasting recut the series into 85 different episodes, restoring much of the violence and eliminating Zark for G-Force (Cartoon Network, 1995). The Gatchaman collections present the series in its original form.

Five teen-age adventurers–Ken the Eagle, Jun the Swan, Ryu the Owl, Jinpei the Swallow, and Joe the Condor–make up the Science Ninja Team. Dressed in bird suits, these stalwart heroes fight the Galactor Group, an evil cabal bent on conquering the world. Galactor henchmen use mecha monsters to steal uranium, hurl meteors at the Earth, interrupt air travel, and, incongruously, capture the world’s supply of sugar. The Ninja Scientists thwart these nefarious schemes.

Gatchaman shows its age, not only in details like Ken’s shoulder-length hair and bell-bottoms, but in the stolid pacing, minimal character development, and rudimentary special effects. Gen-Xers who grew up on Battle of the Planets will love this uncut version. Among the extras are “karaoke” episodes (the dialogue appears only in subtitles, so the viewers can supply the voices) and scenes of six actors auditioning for Ken, including Leraldo Anzaldua, who got the part. Despite the overhyped main event–”Next Big Thing” Brock Lesnar vs. the Rock–many will remember SummerSlam 2002 for one reason: the brief, exhilarating return of Shawn Michaels, the Heartbreak Kid, the Showstopper. The 15-year veteran returned to the ring after a four-year absence for a one-night-only appearance that resulted in the type of exhilarating match that the WWE sorely needed. The lead-in story line was solid, if well worn–former “best friend” Triple H turns on Michaels, leading to a nonsanctioned (i.e., hardcore) match–but the match is a bloody, messy, high-flying epic: Michaels shows no rust and Triple H gives one of his most emotional performances. Every other match (except perhaps RVD vs. Chris Benoit) pales in comparison. Sadly, Brock and Rock had to take the ring after Michaels and Triple H, and the results are underwhelming. Perhaps it’s Lesnar’s fault–his size and lack of charisma recall boring former giants King Kong Bundy or Yokozuna. But in reality, SummerSlam’s main event simply came one match too soon. –Dave McCoy

Bow landed her first sizable role in the 1922 adventure Down to the Sea in Ships, playing a scrappy tomboy granddaughter of a Quaker whaling magnate. The film has little to do with her and everything to do with the thrilling record of authentically re-created 19th-century whaling. The story is a tired romantic melodrama, but the exciting footage on the high seas is utterly captivating, making this a one-of-a-kind document of a long-gone culture. –Sean Axmaker

A very savvy, 1978 film directed by Ted Kotcheff (First Blood) dealing with the seamier side of professional football. Phillip Elliott and Maxwell (Nick Nolte and Mac Davis, respectively) are players for a Texas football team loosely based on the championship Dallas Cowboys. Though at the peak of his football career, Elliott is a personal and physical mess, needing all manner of drugs prescribed by the team physician to play and even to move around. The indifference of the team management and the hypocritical stance toward recreational drug use versus the drug abuse practiced by the players leads to a crisis of conscience for Nolte. The combination of Nolte’s volatile presence and Davis’s understated performance as the quarterback who thinks he’s seen it all helps make North Dallas Forty one of the best sports films around. –Robert Lane
